A high-scoring opening day at the Nkosi Cup delivered everything the home crowd could have hoped for, with the defending champions laying down early markers and several tightly contested group matches setting the tone for a thrilling tournament ahead.
Women’s Group Stage
Namibia 7–3 Zimbabwe
Defending champions Namibia got their title defence off to the perfect start with an emphatic 7–3 win over tournament debutants Zimbabwe in the opening match of the competition. Zimbabwe’s inclusion was a welcome one, but they were immediately tested by a ruthless Namibian outfit.
Two-time Player of the Tournament Kiana-che Cormack opened the scoring before Namibia pulled clear in the second quarter. Zimbabwe battled with their discipline and Namibia capitalised, with Leila and Tamara Grogli both opening their accounts and Jerrica Bartlett also finding the backboard.
By the third quarter Namibia had raced into a 6–0 lead, Tamara Grogli grabbing her second and Ottilie Hinda adding further pressure. To Zimbabwe’s credit they never dropped their heads and struck back with three goals of their own through Alexei Terblanche, who netted twice, and Lylie Wilde. Any hopes of a dramatic finish were ended late on when Sunelle Ludwig sealed the result at 7–3.

Men’s Group Stage
Namibia 6–5 USA
With the sides having shared their previous four international indoor meetings, this one always had the feel of being too close to call and it delivered in full.
Namibia took early control, racing into a 2–0 lead through Dylan Finch and Pieter Jacobs before USA clawed one back just before the break thanks to a moment of brilliance from Alexandre Beauduin, leaving it 2–1 at halftime.
Albert Montilla struck early in the second half to level matters, but Namibia responded through Shayan Azadeh to regain the lead. The final quarter was pure drama. Montilla converted a stroke to make it 3–3 with five minutes remaining before Pat Harris edged USA ahead. What followed was a remarkable spell, Handura immediately equalised, Finch converted a stroke for Namibia and in the space of a single minute the match swung decisively.
Namibia extended the lead to 6–4 with the USA keeper off the field, but Montilla completed his hat-trick to set up a nervy finish. Namibia held firm to secure a pulsating 6–5 victory.

Women’s Group Stage
South Africa 7–0 New Zealand
South Africa continued their strong record against New Zealand, producing a dominant performance in just the third meeting between the two sides.
Cerian Fourie opened the scoring early after finding space out wide and finishing with authority. Malikah Hamza doubled the lead with a composed finish following a superb assist from Jamie Southgate. Fourie added her second from a cleverly disguised penalty corner to give the hosts a 3–0 halftime advantage.
New Zealand thought they had pulled one back early in the third quarter, but the goal was ruled out for obstruction and South Africa took full control from there. Tatum Kroutz struck twice to stretch the lead, the second a beautifully constructed team goal finished after good work from Jess Lardant.
A yellow card for New Zealand opened the door further and Daniella de Oliveira made it 6–0, finishing from a Hamza cross. South Africa kept pushing and were rewarded late on as De Oliveira grabbed her second to complete a convincing 7–0 win.

Men’s Group Stage
South Africa 5–1 New Zealand
South Africa playing in front of their home crowd for the first time since winning the World Cup bronze medal. They came out galvanised and it was no surprise that FIH World Cup player of the tournament Mustapha Cassiem opened the scoring.
His brother Dayaan, the captain, joined the party with a reverse stick to make it 2-0 before Mustapha got his second to make it 3-0 in the first quarter.
Griffinmade a sensational save to deny Mustapha Cassiem his hat-trick but seconds later Hans Neethling finished from a deft touch to make it 4-0. Matthew Symonds pulled a goal back for NZ from a penalty corner on the slip and it was 4-1 at the half time break.
Marvin Simons celebrated his recall to the national team with a good finish to make it 5-1 to the South Africans finishing a move that he had started. Van Woerkom hit the crossbar from a penalty corner for NZ. Ruffel made a few good saves to deny the South Africans and kept it 5-1 with one quarter remaining.
The final quarter had chances but no goals and it finished 5-1 to the hosts and defending champions
